Capillarity

Soil moisture tension key

Pores are able to hold water more or less tightly depending on their sizes. This is due to surface tensional forces.

The soil moisture tension is a force balanced against such capillary forces and is therefore a measure of how tightly water is held in the soil.

Increasing tensions are associated with decreasing soil water contents.
