Soil Science

Introduction

This module introduces the process of:

  • Describing soils in the field
  • Determining soil texture and structure
  • Recognizing soil horizons

To describe soils, you first need access to a soil profile. Simply put, this is an exposed, undisturbed, vertical slice through the soil. Soil profiles, for example, are seen in road cuttings or in specially dug soil pits.

There is more to describing soils than we can cover in this module. For comprehensive coverage, consult 'The Australian Soil and Land Survey Field Handbook.' More details are in the References section.
