Soil nitrogen cycling

Because nearly all the N and S, and a significant part of the P in soil are in organic forms, their cycling is linked to that of carbon. Here we look at the relation between C and N cycling.

The behavior of N as residues or humus decompose depends on the ratio by mass of carbon to nitrogen (C:N) in the organic matter.

ResidueC:N ratio typically between
Wood (oak)130 and 400
Cereal straw60 and 100
Dung (horse, cow, etc)25 and 60
Young grass leaves12 and 15
Lucerne tops9 and 16
