Introduction

Water is central to many soil and plant processes and functions. Soil consistency, strength, compressibility, and penetrability are all affected by water content. Soil temperature is affected by the high latent heat capacity of water. Soil water content also governs the air content and gas exchange of the soil, thus affecting root respiration and microbial activity.

The two most important features of the soil water phase are: 1) the amount of water in a specific quantity of soil (soil water content); 2) the force with which water is retained by the soil matrix (soil moisture tension or matric potential).

Like all substances, water will move from a point of higher potential (low moisture tension, wet soil) to a point of lower potential (high moisture tension, dry soil).
