Soil Science

Introduction

The soil solution has a central position in the cycling of nutrients through soil and plants because roots can only take up nutrients in solution. Nutrients are said to be available to plants if they are either in solution or can be released into solution as needed by the plant. For most nutrients as well as other chemical elements, only a small part of the total amount present in soil is available.

Chemical, biological, and physical processes that influence availability are therefore of great importance to plant nutrient supply.
