Soil Science

Introduction

The ability of soils to provide plants with what they need for growth and reproduction can be defined as soil fertility. In this broad sense, fertility is related to soil chemical, physical, and biological processes that help or harm plants.

Chemical fertility results from those processes that make plant nutrients available and restrict the availability of toxic chemical species.

Biological fertility is connected to the activity of soil biota (look at the module on Soil Organisms).
